The farmhouse is of traditional Cumbrian architecture dating from the 1650’s and has retained many original features such as oak beam supports and some very large rocks within the wall structures! However, where necessary, modernisation has taken place; double glazing throughout and a powerful eco- friendly heating and hot water system providing mains pressure showers; just what you need after a long walk.
The Breakfast room is spacious with views to the rear garden. Bird feeders attached to the windows enable guests to enjoy the extensive birdlife that we encourage from very close quarters indeed. We have Coal Tits, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Nuthatches, Yellowhammers, Woodpeckers and even the occasional Red Squirrel!
Our large terraced rear garden has patio seating at the summer house to watch the birds feeding from the bird table.
A spacious guest lounge with a 27″ flat screen TV with DVD player and WiFi provided. The room retains it’s original oak beams and has a wood burning stove. Within the room are extensive maps, guides and books including multiple copies of Wainwrights classic books.
Around the room are excellent Lakeland photographs by Pete Tasker and a 3 dimensional map of the Lakes which is very useful in understanding the location of Scales Farm and the Wainwright Fells. The lounge provides an excellent meeting and planning place for walking groups who have booked multiple rooms within the guest house. A selection of games are provided along with a collection of DVDs.
Our large front garden can seat up to 14 people, with views across to the Central Eastern fells some of our customers have taken their breakfast outside – on our sunny days!
We have our own large field for exclusive use by our customers to exercise their dogs. This field also provides direct access onto Scales Fell leading to Blencathra.
We can provide, free of charge; walking poles, hats, gloves, compasses and maps to make your walk a success.
We have a boiler room to provide heat and hot water which runs all year. This room is like a mini-sauna and is ideal for drying wet clothes and boots. In addition as the boiler is a eco-friendly wood burner, the room smells nice too!
We have a large off road private car park that can easily accommodate 8 vehicles.
We have a lockable cycle storage conveniently located close to the house and car park suitable for up to 4 cycles and further storage in the stables for a further 8 cycles.
